about

Writing instrumental music is not an endeavor I purposefully decided to pursue. Over many years of learning to play extant music, I would occasionally sit at the dulcimer or pick up a guitar and, for respite from the discipline of practice, let my hands and the instrument play with each other a bit. Sometimes snippets of melody would catch my attention, and inspired and empowered by my son's development as a professional composer, I began trying to develop a few of these into complete compositions. Upon hearing some of my early efforts, family and friends asked what I planned to do with what I was creating.  At the time I had no idea, but this recording is my belated answer to that question.

The ideas for a couple of pieces preceded the music to express them, but most started with the instrument itself suggesting the musical theme, and finding titles was often harder than composing them. I'm indebted to my wife Mary Ellen for naming “Bridge to Nowhere” when she heard how the descending “bridge” leads into a second hornpipe (“Gee Whiz”) that sounds suspiciously similar to the first. Although about half of the tunes were written on hammered dulcimer and half on guitar, all feature the dulcimer in some capacity, whether as melody or accompaniment instrument.
